Huawei Watch GT 2 Review

The Watch GT 2 is the newly released smart watch from the tech giant Huawei and just like its predecessor the Watch GT, the GT 2 is an elegant fitness tracker in a watch body. It is one of the cheapest smart watch you can get right now and although it has a few glitches such as not being able to download Google apps, it boasts stellar two-week battery life and is the perfect fitness tracker.

The Watch GT 2 comes in two different sizes, there’s the smaller, elegant 42mm version and a large 46mm model which comes with a speaker for phone call functionality when connected to your phone, stress-tracking ability and storage for offline music.

In this article we’ll be discussing the Huawei GT 2’s design, display, hardware and software also taking a look at its battery life to let you know if the GT 2 is the best smart watch for Android phones in the market right now.

Design and Hardware

The Watch GT 2 is available in two sizes, the 46mm and 42mm models and there are three editions of each size including Sport, Classical and Elite, each comes with different finishes and coloured straps. Huawei Watch GT 2 weighs 41g and 10.7mm thick, which makes it light and convenient in hand.

Both Watch GT 2 feature a 3D glass screen with curved edges which merges into the watch body frame creating a bezel-less design. This make the smart watch an attractive watch to wear and has a similar look close to the original Huawei Watch GT.

Around the back of the watch is a heart monitor which is fitted into the watch’s back without any bulging. The watch is also waterproof and rated 5ATM, which means it can survive depths of 50 meters underwater for up to 30 minutes.

The 46mm model sports a 1.39-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels and a 326 PPI, which makes it screen display quite sharp and bright, while the 42mm variant features a reduced 1.2-inch AMOLED screen with a 390 x 390 display resolution which is not as sharp as the 46mm model.

The display of the Watch GT 2 is good for a smart watch at its price and is very visible under direct sunlight due its fast ambience sensor which can detect a change in environment.

The Watch GT 2 is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin A1 chipset with Huawei’s Lite OS running on top. In terms of memory, it has 2GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage in which 2.2GB is available to use.

In terms of apps, the Watch GT 2 doesn’t have an app store and lacks support for third-party apps. There’s also no options to add widgets or customize the watch which makes the smartwatch feel more like a digital watch with GPS and fitness tracking.

The Huawei Watch GT 2 also features Bluetooth 5.1 as well a built-in GPS with latest tracking tools for more accurate and precise positioning. It also supports smartphones running on Android 4.4 or higher and iOS 9.0 or higher.

In terms of fitness tracking there’s an abundance of options available on the Watch GT 2, various indoor and outdoor exercises such as running, walking, cycling, hiking, swimming and lots more can be tracked with the Huawei Watch GT 2.

Heart rate tracking is now better than the Watch GT as the Watch GT 2 can now track if the heart rate goes below or above a recommended level and warns the user by vibrating.

Another new feature on the Watch GT 2 is the TruSleep 2.0 feature, which tracks your sleep periods, including how long you spend in a light or deep sleep, by tracking your eye movements as well as real-time tracking of your heart rate, pulse, and breathing quality.

There’s also a TruRelax mode that monitors changes in your heart beat rate, and provides you with an all-day stress level report. The app has a breathing exercise to help you calm down if it detects you’re feeling stressed.

The Watch GT 2 455mAh battery comes with an intelligent power-saving which Huawei claims lasts two weeks on a single charge. But in terms of real world use, the GT 2 lasts around ten days on the 46mm version and lasts 7 days on the 42mm model even with some tracking features on.
